Schuck and Crawford have stuck again! 

This time publishing essays in a new collection titled American History Through American Sports: From Colonial Lacrosse to Extreme Sports (2012) that is published by ABC-CLIO Praeger. 

Schuck contributed an essay titled "Reopening the Curtain on Rugby in America."  Schuck, the faculty adviser for ONU's mens' and womens' ruby club teams, wrote about how U.S. National Rugby Teams defeated international competition in the 1920s, but interest in the sport waned as the Olympics did away with it as an event.  Rugby's popularity is, however, on the rise again.

Crawford contributed the first essay in the three volume set titled "America Plays: Sports in Colonial Times that traces the development of American sports as played by Native Americans, the four main British immigrnt groups, and African slaves.  Crawford has published several entries, articles, and his own book The Use of Sport to Promote the American Way of Life During the Cold War: Cultural Propaganda, 1946-1963 published in 2008 by the Edwin Mellen Press.

This volume is the second compilation that Schuck and Crawford have published chapters or essays in during the past year.  A few months ago, Schuck and his son Ray I Schuck edited and contributed chapters, and Crawford also contributed a chapter, in Do You Believe in Rock and Roll: Essays on Don McLean's American Pie.

The essays incorporate U.S. history with sport history and will make good reading, or so Schuck and Crawford hope!

Professor Alexander Op-Ed in Cleveland Plain Dealer

Dr. Alexander continues his efforts to educate the public about the mysterious Electoral College.  This time his forum is the Opinion Pages of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.  In his opinion piece titled "Our Vote Goes to College: Who Are the Electors?" Alexander explains where the Electoral College originated and why, and includes some information about the electors themselves.  Alexander has been studying this body since the 2000 election and is now a widely acknowledged expert who has been quoted in numerous media sources including CSPAN, the Boston Globe, and even given interviews to international sources in Canada, Italy, and Japan.  Learn more about this crucial step in our election process by reading Alexander's piece here.

Finals Week Completes Fall Semester

Several students (aka Hill Rats for the amount of time they spend here) are hard at work studying for their final examinations this week.  Several have seemed to have moved into Hill Building for the duration.  Thanks to an upgrade in the furniture this summer, they can go about their studies in comfort.

Good luck Hill Rats on finals and we hope everyone has an action-packed, or relaxing (your choice) Christmas Vacation!

Christmas at the Hill

Dr. Wilson looks on with satisfaction as students enjoy the HPJ Christmas Party.  Wilson was the motivating force behind the party, setting up the tree and organizing the food.  He brought his university, if not world - famous gumbo, and other faculty and staff members chipped in for the potluck fare. 

Dr. Schuck organized the gift giveaway, with students taking a number from a bowl and finding the corresponding present under the tree.  Students were then free to keep their present, donate it to a toy drive, or trade it.

A good time was had by all!

Santa Claus Unmasked?

This grainy, out-of-focus may be the final proof of Santa Claus's secret identity.  We always knew that Professor Schuck was jolly, but thought that Dr. Lomax was more properly coiffed for the role.

Dr. Schuck was indeed placing presents under the tree, but they came from his collection of items scoured from sales bins, garage sales, along with unused items donated by staff and faculty, not from elves at the North Pole.

Silliness at Mock Trial Retreat

Its not all law and briefs for the ONU Mock Trial Team.  At a recent retreat to the Metzger Nature Center, they decided to brush off a classic and have a pie fight!

No word on whether this is part of our strategy for tournaments...

Mary Miller went Hilling in St. Louis when she traveled with ONU's Women's Basketball team to a tournament there.  Go Bears!
